NLC Strike: Riots in Lagos Over Fuel Price Hike

Riots have broken out in some parts of Nigeria’s commercial capital of Lagos, as a faction of Nigerian Labour Congress have ahead with an indefinite nationwide strike on Wednesday.
The Trade Union Congress announced their decision to pull out of the strike after a National Industrial Court issued a restraining order against the strike on Tuesday. Many uncertain Lagosians shunned the strike action called over the hike in the pump price of fuel.

The government had last week introduced a new price band for gasoline following a partial liberalization of the oil sector.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration on May 11 increased gasoline prices by 67 percent in order to attract private importers, who will be able to recover their costs and help end fuel shortages that have persisted for months in the country.

A faction of the NLC led by Comrade Ayuba Wabba had announced that an indefinite strike commences today after its meeting with the Federal Government ended in a deadlock. The other faction led by Joe Ajaero had agreed with the Federal Government to set up a joint committee to deliberate on the issue of minimum wage, N500bn social investment and review the N145 new pump price of gasoline. The two factions of the NLC had recently asked for a new minimum wage based on the present economic realities. The committee has two weeks to report back in two weeks.

While some workers aligned with the Wabba-led faction, several others followed the directive by the Ajaero-led NLC that there would be no strike. Hoodlums were believed to have taken advantage of the confusion to create mayhem, smashing windscreens and hurling stones at passing vehicles.

Security agencies had since taken control of areas where violence was reported earlier on Wednesday.

There is what oyinbo people (White-men) call appetizer.
So while your guests are engaged with the program of the day, they do not expect the table to empty and dry. Nigerians want to see small chops in small disposable plates served on the table. They do not joke with the puff-puff, samosas, steak meat that would be served there. While they wait for the famous party rice, they want to keep their mouths busy.

Have you heard the saying Butter is not the food for monkeys?
That is how some people regard rice. They would rather go for a heavier meal.
So as different classes of people would be in attendance, you have to put this into consideration when planning the party. The older people in the society prefer to eat pounded yam and expect to find this or any other solid food on the menu because when not found some people get disappointed.

for classy parties, Nigerians expect to see a variety of foods set on the menu. Porridge is one food Nigerians do not joke with at parties as many people would love to go for it. Depending on how well made it is, you will be surprised to see that this does not last till the end of the party.

Nigerians are known to be a fan of hot amala especially when the soup is gbegiri mixed with ewedu and in order case efo riro.
Hmmm... Hope you are not hungry? If you are, hurry, Go Grab a Plate.

Akinwunmi Ambode added 50 BRT buses to ease fuel price increase pains

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday provided 50 new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses to cushion the fuel price hike effect.
The governor donated the buses to Primero Transport Services Ltd, operators of the new blue BRT service, which runs along the BRT corridor from Ikorodu to Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS).
Primero Managing Director Fola Tinubu told reporters in Ikorodu yesterday that the governor’s gesture was an expression of faith in BRT’s ability to meet the city’s traffic needs.

Tanzania's President finds 10,000 “ghost workers” on public payroll

10,000 “ghost workers” has been slashed from Tanzania
public sector payroll, saving government coffers more than
$2m a month.
The discovery of the non-existent workers followed a nationwide audit ordered by president John Magufuli in March as part of a crackdown on corruption and wasteful public spending.
Officials told Reuters the payroll audit is continuing and more ghost workers are expected to be identified.
At an event at the Tanzanian High Commission in London at the weekend, prime minister Kassim Majaliwa said the authorities will start to “crack the whip” against those receiving the money immediately, AllAfrica reported.
President Magufuli was elected in October. His vows to weed out graft and unnecessary public expenditure were popular with Tanzanians fed up with the endemic corruption that has frustrated the country’s development.
Tanzania President
John Magufuli
Since his election, Magufuli has cancelled elaborate independence day celebrations, cut spending for a dinner celebrating the opening of parliament and banned foreign travel for all government officials apart from the president, vice president and prime minister.
Nicknamed the “bulldozer” following his tenure as public works minister, Magufuli has begun embarking on surprise visits to catch the corrupt or incompetent in the act.
So far this has led to the firing of a hospital chief and dissolution of its governing board and the arrest of the Tanzania Revenue Authority chief and five of his top lieutenants for tax fraud, which cost around $40m in revenue.
He has also dismissed several other senior officials, including the head of the anti-graft body.
The country spends over $260m every month on its wage bill, which the government thinks has been hugely inflated by non-existent workers.

Earlier this year, an audit revealed 24,000 "ghost workers" on the Nigerian government payroll, saying around $11.5m.
